Steps Discipline System: Details

 

STEP 1  
Behaviour Breaking one of the school rules.
Consequence After repeated verbal warnings name placed on Mahi Kino.

STEP 2  
Behaviour Breaking a school rule for the second time on the same day.
Consequence A tick placed next to name on Mahi Kino. This results in a 30 minute lunch time detention (15 minutes for Yr 1-3 students), on the following school day.

STEP 3  
Behaviour Breaking a school rule for the third time on the same day.
Consequence A second tick placed next to name on Mahi Kino.
This results in a 30 minute after school detention (15 minutes for Yr 1-3 students), on the following school day. A detention letter is sent home to parents, which should be signed and returned to school.

STEP 4  
Behaviour Serious breaches of school rules.
Examples Swearing at a teacher/adult, defiance towards teachers, physical violence, persistent misbehaviour, deliberately damaging school property.
Consequence

Parents will be informed through a letter or phone call.

Students sent to team leader for remainder of day. In Deputy Principal or Team Leader’s case students are sent to a support teacher in same learning team. 

The students name is placed on Mahi Kino with two ticks, resulting in 30 minute detentions on the following two school days.

Parents are contacted by the teacher to be made aware of consequences.

Student is placed on Step Four on the register in the Principal’s office.


STEP 5  
Behaviour Continued serious breaches of school rules after warnings.
Consequence

Student sent to work outside Principal’s office for 2 or 3 days.
Student to have different lunch/play times from set school times.

Parents contacted by phone and letter to be made aware of consequences.

Meeting set up involving parents, student, teacher and learning team leader.

Student placed on Step Five on Steps Register in Principal’s office.


STEP 6  
Behaviour Continued serious breaches of school rules.
Consequence

Child to be stood down for up to three days.

Meeting involving parents, teacher, student and principal.
Parents contacted by phone and letter to be made aware of consequences.

Student placed on Step Six on the Steps Register in Principal’s office.

Board of Trustees and Ministry Of Education notified.


STEP 7  
Behaviour The most serious behaviours, normally of a repeat nature where warnings and counselling have not been heeded.
Consequence

Suspension or further stand down from School. 

If a suspension there will be a meeting with Board of Trustees discipline committee and parents.

Formal suspension steps from Ministry of Education followed.
