I have had a wonderful start to the day – and it reflects most days here at Carterton School for me. I have been part of an 8am meeting with teachers to discuss admin issues, everyone was working together to get things ironed out for whole school events and finding practical solutions for problems. A couple of parents have contacted me by phone or in person, two to pass on good news and one asking for help.

Then I walked past the classrooms – the doors were open, there was a low buzz of children’s voices (and sometimes the teachers!). One class burst out of the classroom door and started their run around the grounds (including one boy who leapfrogged the rubbish bin – not a good idea, but when I raised my eyebrows his friends said ‘He’s happy!’) In a senior room I was greeted by several students and the teacher as they settled to work on the mat puzzling over new maths problems with our math co-teacher. As I strolled back from the bright blue, new pool the sun was shining and a slight breeze was blowing, the mountains look gorgeous. I am so lucky to be here, doing a job I love in a fantastic place with fantastic people. We need to spend time to stop and think about the special things in our lives. Even when things seem at their darkest, or the volume of ‘things to do’ seems to take over, there is a lot to be happy about. I would never be able to leapfrog the rubbish bin, but I related to the boys feelings as he did!
