Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Year 8 students are currently visiting the annual open days at the local secondary schools to help them to decide which school they would like to enroll in for next year.

We are conducting fire and earthquake drills at the moment. It may be a good opportunity to discuss what to do at your place in the event of an emergency.

Did you know that being sunsmart isn’t restricted to the hot summer months? Vitamin D plays an important part in maintaining healthy bones. To get a sufficient amount of vitamin D we need two or three hours of sun each week in the winter months.  At school, we help by encouraging children to play outside on fine days.  To find out more go to: www.sunsmart.org.nz/uvi.

Dave, our caretaker, takes very good care of the school grounds to make sure the children have a lovely environment and a safe place to play.  Over the winter months it is more difficult to maintain the grassy areas due to the colder and wetter weather.  We ask your help to keep our school entranceway looking fantastic by not driving on the grass.

The After school care held in the hall have had a change of staff.  We are sorry to see Dolly & Irene leave.  The programme is still operating with the same arrangements.  Welcome to Elena and the team.  If you have any questions, please contact them or the YMCA in Masterton.

The uniform shop will be open next Wednesday 4th August from 8.30am to 9.30am.  Is there any uniform that people want to sell?  Please send it in before next Wednesday.

Eveready Barcodes – Please keep collecting these.  Send them into the school office and we will post them off to Eveready to go into the draw to win computer equipment for our school.

Dodge Bro’s Dance – 31st July at 7.30 pm till late is being held at Carterton School Hall.  This is our 4th year running this dance and it has proved to be a great night out.  It is a fundraiser for the Wairarapa/Carterton JPL 13th grade Soccer team to go on a tournament.  Tickets are $20 each from Debbie Fryer 379 6588.

We have been asked to put the following notice in our newsletter on behalf of Victoria University:

Help wanted with a new study on step or blended families
The Families Commission has identified the need to better understand the challenges faced by step or blended families.  They have helped fund a new study by researchers from the Roy McKenzie Centre for the Study of Families at Victoria University, who are conducting the ‘Overcoming the challenges to re-partnering’ study.  The study aims to investigate how couples and children deal with the issues that typically face these families.
Dr Jeremy Robertson, Deputy Director of the Roy McKenzie Centre, is interested in talking to members of married or cohabiting stepfamilies who have been together for at least five years.  Participation would involve one interview of approximately one hour, at a time and place to suit the parent.
The results of these studies will be valuable for organizations’ and individuals who work with families, government organizations’ who make policies related to families and stepfamilies themselves.
For more information contact -Dr Jeremy Robertson, Phone: 04 463 6831 or 021 143 8712, Email: jeremy.robertson@vuw.ac.nz, Roy McKenzie Centre for the Study of Families, Victoria University, PO Box 600, Wellington

Yours sincerely,
Wendy Taylor
