Carterton School - Newsletter No 4 – 10th August 2010

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As you are aware the H1N1 flu virus is prevalent at the moment. We have had large numbers of children absent and are sending numerous children home as the initial symptoms develop very quickly. Thanks for letting us know when your child will be absent. Text messages can be left on 027 263 0770. The Ministry of Health has advised us that they are not planning to advise schools and early childhood centres to close.

Below is a reminder of the information given by the Ministry of Health.

Signs and symptoms of influenza include:

  • Temperature (more than 38c)
  • Fever, shivers, chills or sweats
  • Sore throat and or cough

We therefore recommend the following actions:

  • Anyone with influenza like symptoms should remain away from school until 48 hours  after the symptoms have gone.
  • If symptoms get worse seek advice from Healthline (0800 611 116) or your own doctor

We had lots of extra people at school on Friday for the annual chess tournament.  Many thanks to Ronny Tankersley & Minty Hunter for organising this event, and to Take Note for sponsoring it. Today children from Year 5 and above are representing the school at the annual Matharapa competition in the Masterton Town Hall. The children are very busy preparing for our Science Fair to be held next week.  From talking to a number of children there are some very interesting projects being prepared.  I am looking forward to seeing their presentations.  Please come along and have a look on Tuesday between 3 and 7 p.m.

Once again, thank you for your generous support of the Wereta-Hadfield family following the fire that destroyed their home.  You will be pleased to know they have found a new place to live.  If anyone is able to donate items for the kitchen or furniture, please contact the school.  Your generosity will be appreciated.

Bingo Night – Camp Fundraiser Year 7 & 8’s Friday 27th August from 7.00-10.00 pm in the school hall.  $10 ticket includes supper and 1 card.  There will be a bar operating on the night.  Prizes for 1st line and card completed.  Purchase tickets from Room 1 and 2.

Kuranui College enrolments for 2011

Lost Property!  Parents/Caregivers – there are many un-named school jerseys, shoes, jackets etc on the lost property racks.  If these are unclaimed by the end of the week – 13th August, they will be sorted and put either with the second hand school uniforms or will be given to the Salvation Army shop.  PLEASE name your child’s clothing!  Vivid pens are helpful as the names don’t wash off.  (Class teachers can share vivids if required).

The Salvation Army Playgroup
runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-12 noon at 210 High St Sth, behind the blue building.  $2 per child, includes morning tea.

Jumping Beans music and movement group for 0-5 year old on Mondays from 9.30-11.00 am at 208 High St Sth (back part of the church building).  $2 per child, includes morning tea.

Phone 379 7176 for more information on any of the above.

Yours sincerely,

Wendy Taylor
