Carterton School - Newsletter No 5 – 17th August 2010

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Over the past couple of weeks we have had large numbers of children affected by the H1N1 flu virus.  We are pleased to note that our absence rate has dropped rapidly since last week.  However, do continue to keep sick children home until they are well again.

Last week we enjoyed a musical performance from Wairapapa College.  Just as our children enjoyed the music, the performers were entranced by our children who were an ‘animated and uninhibited audience’.  This show has stimulated the children’s interest in preparing their own presentations, so watch this space!

The children have been very busy preparing for our Science Fair.  I was privileged to be asked to help judge these.  Many of the projects were of a very high standard with some very interesting topics being investigated.  Please come along and have a look tonight between 3 and 7 p.m.  Next week, our top presentations will be sent to the Wairarapa Science Fair.  These will be judged on Wednesday 25th August with that display open to the public on Thursday 26th 10a.m-3p.m and 6p.m – 7p.m.

The builders are nearing completion of the Junior Block upgrade.  It is looking very exciting over there. We are looking forward to finally moving into the new Junior classrooms.  As this will involve some of the Year 1 children changing classrooms, we will inform all those families by the end of this week.

BP Technology Challenge.  Yesterday four teams participated in the BP Technology Challenge at Martinborough School.  Each team worked very well together to solve three challenging tasks using a variety of materials such as newspaper, string, ice block sticks and table tennis balls.  Congratulations to the Explosions for winning first place for their flagpole, and to the Enzymes for coming 3rd with their nomadic shelter.

Fantastic results from the Matharapa Competition last week.  Year 5 & 6 came 2nd  and Year 7’s were 3rd.
