Carterton School - Newsletter No 8 – 7th September 2010

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to Anita Ward & Amanda Cottle, first year student teachers learning alongside Andrea Harvey in Room 12 & Lesley Kennedy in Room 2.

The school library is now open.
The room looks fantastic!  Thank you to Sue our Librarian for making our library such an interesting and welcoming place to be, especially at lunchtimes.  Also, thanks to the librarians who are helping at lunchtimes.  Our thanks must go to the local Carterton Library for their support over the previous two terms.  Please check to make sure that your child/children have returned these books to the class teacher.

Thank you to all those who supported our Paint the School Yellow fundraiser on Daffodil Day ☺.  We raised in excess of $200 for the local Cancer Society.

Please remind your child/ren to hand in any mobile phones to the office when they arrive at school as these are not to be kept in bags or desks during the school day.

Internet Safety – The school has been made aware that some inappropriate messages have been left on a child’s Facebook page from what seems to be fellow students.  The school periodically educates children about ways to keep themselves safe, including on the Internet. Please talk to your children about these social networking pages and what to do if they receive messages, including on their phones, which make them uncomfortable or unhappy.
Facebook advises: If you are under age 13, please do not attempt to register for Facebook or provide any personal information about yourself to us. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. If you believe that we might have any information from a child under age 13, please contact us.
If your child is 13 and has a Facebook page, these guidelines may also help:   Ensure you have access to the account, know the password and check out any friend requests etc. received before permission is given to accept them, plus periodically look to see the messages being left there.

Netball – Reminder – Primary Netball prize giving is tonight in the Carterton School Hall 6.30-8.00 pm.  Girls please bring a plate.  All welcome.

Reminder – The school cell phone (027 263 0770) is for texting absences only.  The phone is checked just after 9 am each day and all absences are recorded.  There is no money on this phone so it can’t be used to reply to texts or retrieve voice messages.  Please do not phone the cell phone number, or text a message for your child for after school.  If we are out of the room it will not be answered as we don’t check the phone during the day, so will not retrieve any message you leave.  Thanks to the many parents who use this great service correctly.

Year 8 Powell Hut annual challenge.  Thursday 9th and Friday 10th September .  Anyone who could lend a pack please send to Room 1.  Thanks – Brent Ballantyne.

Chocolates -  We still have chocolates to sell if you are wanting to buy any or sell to others, collect a box from the school office.

The PTA will have a stall outside Jacqui Murray Dance Studio
on Sunday at the Daffodil Carnival to sell chocolates.  If anyone can spare an hour to man the stall, can they please email me on kate_matt@xtra.co.nz.

Pet Day Cups.
Pet Day is the second week of Term 4.  Please return any cups won last year to school by Friday 17th September.

Home Garden Competition – This is an annual event where children design, plant and diary their gardening activities.  The gardens are judged in December.  Children are able to plant seeds at school and choose whether they grow flowers, vegetables or both.  Plants are supplied by the school for garden entries.
