Carterton School - Newsletter No 1 – 2nd August 2011

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Tena koutou katoa. Welcome to Term 3 of 2011 already! Where has the year gone so far? The two week break flew past with a range of weather for us to experience. I enjoyed a mixture of activities, a few days away at the coast, some work, a couple of days playing with Loli, my horse, and four days at a ‘Realising Maori Potential’ conference. (More of that in a later newsletter!) It is great to see everyone back fit and healthy this week.

We have had a few changes in classes with a couple of people moving away from the area, and other families moving to Carterton. If you are a new family to school we warmly welcome you to our community. Please keep in touch with us, and never hesitate to come in or call if you have any questions or ideas.

Michael O’Connell, the teacher in Room 9, will be away from school for three weeks. Trasna Graham will be teaching while Michael is away.

We welcome back Barbara Whitburn to her full time position of Room 11 teacher and team leader of the Year 5&6 learning team.

This term is going to be a very exciting one as we move closer and closer to the Rugby World Cup. We have heard today the three All Blacks will be visiting Carterton on Friday 2 September for 4 hours! They will be refereeing some Rippa games and meeting the locals. More details later. The tickets requested by families for Georgia v Argentina are on their way.

Every class will be involved in the Primary Enterprise Programme (PrEP) this term. Students in teams 2-4 have already been allocated to ventures and will be running their own small businesses, culminating in a whole school Market Day on Friday 30 September. This is a fantastic learning experience.  Keep asking your child (and their teacher!) what s/he is doing for PrEP.

Breakfast Club will be available every day from this week! Monday and Thursday we will have ‘full’ breakfast (Weetbix, Milo, stewed fruit, toast with jam, honey or Marmite) on other days we will just have Weetbix and milk available. Anyone can come to the hall from 8.15am to 8.40am to have some thing to eat to keep their brain and body working through the day. It’s FREE! Thank you to Sue McGhie for opening breakfast club on these extra days. Thanks also to our sponsors Fonterra, Sanitarium, New World, and Wild Oates.

You are invited to our first Family Information Evening and supper at school on Thursday 1 September. Come along at 5pm and see some of our fabulous Kapa Haka group perform, there will also be a performance by our choir and ukulele group, other student groups may entertain us too. After the performances in the hall children will be taken to Rooms 13 and 14 for a free sausage sizzle tea and games / DVDs. Adults in the hall will then hear some short presentations by groups related to the school that are here to support our community, eg our public health nurse, budget advisory service. Then we will have supper in the hall with a chance to chat together. The evening will finish at 7pm. There are spot prizes for adults and a small goodie bag for each family to take home.

Lovely white pet drake looking for a home! One of my 6 ducks has become a victim of his ‘pals’ and has had to be separated from them. He is very friendly- comes up to be fed. Does not fly away...in fact I can’t remember seeing them fly at all!! If you could offer him a home let me know! Alison

Yours Sincerely,

Alison Woollard,

Principal

Mountains

Mountains are very high

Other mountains that are tall steal the sun from us

Up so high in the sky

Names of the mountains are Maori

Tall as the highest tree

A mountain steals the snow

In a mountain it is made of dirt

Now mountains are everywhere

Snow falls on them

Mountains

Mountains are so high and tall.

Oh no, is it going to fall?

Ugly? No I don’t think so.

No, it is not ugly it is beautiful.

Tall, so tall

At the top there would be such a sight!

In the sky so high.

No! It couldn’t be!

Snow – it is covered with snow!

So high I couldn’t bear to get up there

Oh no, I have to go up there!
